Living Learning Communities

Living Learning Communities (LLCs) are programs in the residence halls that bring students together who share the same academic background, major, or interest. LLCs are for first-year students and offers them the opportunity to live together on the same floor. LLCs receive support from specific departments based upon majors, general areas of study, and general interests.
Why an LLC?

Why an LLC?

Students in LLCs have access to a staff or faculty mentor that works to connect students to their academic background, major, or interest. Mentors connect with students in their residence hall, around campus, and even during off campus events. In addition, LLC students enjoy:

  • Easier college transition
  • Better class attendance
  • Broader campus involvement
  • Higher average GPA
  • Elevated graduation rates

What kinds of LLCs does UNT offer?

Individual LLCs vary from one year to another.  You can learn more about each LLC from their individual descriptions. Historically, there have been LLCs for Art, Engineering, Music and Jazz, Media Arts, Business, and Service.

Joining LLCs

Living Learning Communities Application Process

Students are able to preference a Living Learning Community when completing the housing application. Simply indicate interest in LLCs and then rank order the available LLCs.

Any roommates and/or suitemates selected during roommate matching will take precedence over building and room type preferences, including LLC preferences. If you want to participate in an LLC and select your roommate, both you and your roommate need to select the same LLC for the highest likelihood of LLC placement.

LLC FAQ

Q: Where will I live if I join an LLC?

A: We house LLCs in several different residence halls, depending upon the LLC you choose to join. Check the information page for the particular Living Learning Community in which you are interested for details on where it is housed.

Q: How are roommates determined for LLCs?

A: Any roommates and/or suitemates selected during roommate matching will take precedence over building and room type preferences, including LLC preferences. If you want to participate in an LLC and select your roommate, both you and your roommate need to select the same LLC for the highest likelihood of LLC placement.

Q: What is the cost of joining an LLC?

A: There is no extra cost for joining an LLC. See our rates information for costs associated with each residence hall.

Q: What if I change my major after I join an LLC?

A: If you change to a major that no longer fits with the LLC, you would still be allowed to stay in your assigned room for the full 9-month academic year. If desired, you could request to change rooms after the school year starts. Room change requests are granted based upon availability.

Q: What UNT faculty or staff are involved with LLCs?

A: Each LLC has a dedicated resident assistant assigned to that community whose job it is to develop community and promote academic success. Our Academic LLCs also have staff or faculty advisors who add co-curricular education to the experience.

Q: Can I still be in an LLC if my major does not match the LLC's focus?

A: Any student can join most of the LLCs. However, students will reap the most benefit from participating in an LLC that corresponds with their academic major, field of study, career path or area of general interest.

Q: What if none of the LLCs fit me?

A: Do not preference an LLC on the housing application.
