TAMS Resident Assistant
The Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science Resident Assistant (TAMS RA) position
is a student employee position within TAMS program, supported by the Department of
Housing and Residence Life and works as a member of a residence hall staff. A TAMS
RA’s primary responsibility is to act as a facilitator of community development in
McConnell Hall by working with students to provide an orderly and safe environment
to live in, and to provide opportunities for the social, educational, and intellectual
development of the residents.
TAMS RAs are selected on the basis of their intellect, leadership qualities, willingness
to assume responsibilities, and ability to relate to residents. To meet the needs
of the department, TAMS RAs must remain flexible and creative enough to fill a combination
of roles, including: friend, advisor, programmer, resource person, educator, counselor,
role model, and authority figure, among others. In addition, TAMS RAs should be committed
to their own personal growth and education.
TAMS RAs receive a monthly stipend, room and board as compensation for an average
15-hour work week. TAMS RA responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Planning hall programs and events,
- Meeting with and assisting individual students,
- Reporting maintenance problems,
- Enforcing policy and regulations,
- Completely regular nightly room checks,
- Supporting campus wide events such as First Fight week,
- Staffing the residence hall front desk,
- Completing on–call duties,
- Providing transportation for students in need of local medical facilities,
- Attending staff development and training, and
- Executing other tasks assigned by the supervisors or the Department of Housing and
Residence Life.
This position reports to the Hall Director of a residence hall.
