New first-year UNT students Fall 2023/Spring 2024 housing application process

UNT’s first-time in college on-campus housing requirement allows students the opportunity to engage with the campus in many important ways.

Priority for first-time in college student housing assignments will be given to those who have been accepted to the University and have completed a housing application prior to June 1, 2023.

Important information to consider prior to the Fall 2023/Spring 2024 housing application opening:eHousing - Apply for Housing link indicated with arrow

  • Take a look at the information about each of the residence halls for a general description of the building, room types offered, and pictures of rooms and floor plans
  • Check out meal plan options available through Dining Services
  • Consider the rates for both Housing and Dining
  • Carefully review the Housing License Agreement to thoroughly understand the commitment that you are making by completing an application to UNT Housing
    • Due to the cancelation terms and the binding nature of the License Agreement, we want you to fully understand the agreement you will sign during the application process.
  • Note that an application payment is required to complete the application and secure your selected hall and room preference.

First year students that would like to request an exemption to this policy should visit the Commuter Exemption information

Self-Selection Assignment Process for Fall 23/Spring 24 Applications

Students with a complete housing application that includes a specific room type preference for the Fall 2023/Spring 2024 have the opportunity to complete their own room assignment.  Students login to eHousing and complete their assignment to the available rooms in the building that matches the room type preference on their housing application.

Student access to the Self-Select Room Assignment process will be available using the following schedule:

Self-select for students with a formed roommate group

Start Date/Time

Hall Preference for:

Tuesday, June 6 @ 9 AM

Bruce, Clark, Crumley, Honors, Joe Greene

Wednesday, June 7 @ 9 AM

Kerr, Legends, Maple

Thursday, June 8 @ 9 AM

Mozart, Rawlins, Santa Fe, Traditions, Victory, West

Self-select for students not in a roommate group

Bruce, Clark, Crumley, Honors, Joe Greene

Wednesday, June 14 @ 9 AM

Kerr, Legends, Maple

Thursday, June 15 @ 9 AM

Access to the self-select assignment process will close on Monday at 8 AM for each week.  Those students that do not select a space during the final window will be assigned to remaining available space based on their application's room preference by Housing.

To complete the self-select room and meal plan booking, during a self-selection window, students will:

  1. login to eHousing
  2. select the "Complete My Booking" link on the left menu
  3. use the "Fall 23/Spring 24 Self-Assign" link.
  4. complete the provided selection process to select a room and complete their meal plan booking

Students with a valid roommate group will be able to assign both members of the group at one time.  We recommend that roommates communicate prior to agree on any criteria for selecting a space for both roommates or coordinating a time login to eHousing together during your hall’s self-selection window to check availability together.

Those students that are still in the process of completing their roommate group may do so leading up to and during the process by returning to their application summary and “edit”ing their roommate preference to create a group.

Students that do not have a roommate group will assign themselves once the initial 24 hours of the self-assignment window has passed.

Students that do not complete a self-assignment will be assigned by Housing following the conclusion of the full schedule.

Upperclassman Waitlist to address limited availability for Fall 2023/Spring 2024

For more than 40 years, UNT policy has required on-campus residency for first-year students to allow new students to engage with UNT in many important ways. UNT is not changing policy regarding the housing of upperclassmen on campus for the Fall 2023/Spring 2024 application period but bed space allocation decisions will be made to meet the expected freshmen demands for the coming academic year.

As UNT is anticipating further growth of the Fall 2023 freshman class, Housing will allocate adequate bed space to meet the expected number of students subject to the first-year student residency requirement.  The increased demand for freshmen space will result in a corresponding decrease of the total number of beds available for upperclassmen on campus.

Beginning on February 1st, returning and new transfers students submitting a housing application for the Fall 2023/Spring 2024 can expect to be added to the upperclassmen Housing Waitlist.  The Waitlist will be utilized to assign upperclassmen as space can be determined to be available through the application period leading up to the start of the Fall 2023 semester.

Completion of a Waitlist application does not guarantee that a housing assignment will be completed.  Availability to assign upperclassmen applications will be evaluated on an on-going basis.

Managing a Completed Housing Waitlist Application

It is expected that upperclassmen students will continue to make decisions about their Fall 23/Spring 24 housing accommodations throughout the spring and summer leading up to the start of the fall semester.

Students with a completed Housing Waitlist application may return to the eHousing portal to manage the status of the application from the “Apply for Housing” link and using the “Manage my Housing Waitlist status” link on the Housing Application Landing Page to either:

  • Confirm that they want to REMAIN on the Housing Waitlist for possible assignment.
    • Includes acknowledgement that, if assigned, upperclassmen room assignments are expected to be in a single occupancy room option with a higher associated rate.
  • Cancel their Fall 23/Spring 24 Housing Waitlist application and REMOVE themselves from the Housing Waitlist
    • Includes release from the Housing License Agreement, refund of previously submitted application payment, and forfeit of the opportunity for on-campus room assignment for the Fall 23/Spring 24.

Students electing to REMAIN on the Housing Waitlist keep their application active and eligible for assignment, as space allows.  Students are able to update from the REMAIN status at a later point, as they finalize alternate housing arrangements for the Fall 23/Spring 24

Students that REMOVE themselves from the Housing Waitlist are not able to undo or reverse the decision at a later date.

Preparation for Returning and new Transfer students - limited availability for Fall 2023/Spring 2024

Recognizing that limited availability of upperclassman space creates a possible challenge for our current residents in the coming year, UNT will offer numerous resources and opportunities in the coming months to help students navigate through the exploration of off-campus housing options.

Resources that UNT Housing & Residence Life will be referring students to include:

Upperclassmen that create a Fall 2023/Spring 2024 application profile will have the opportunity to utilize eHousing RoomMate Matching to identify roommate possibilities.  Upperclassmen that find a roommate match should consider that off-campus housing options may be the best opportunity to coordinate a housing solution that allows for roommates to live together.

Fall 2023 Housing Profile and RoomMate Matching

The first step to living on campus for the Fall 2023/Spring 2024 became available at 9 AM on Wednesday, October 2022.

Logging in to eHousing, clicking the "Apply for Housing" link, and selecting the Fall 2023/Spring 2024 Application will take students through a brief process to activate a Fall 2023 Housing application profile.

The active Fall 2023 application profile gives immediate access to use eHousing RoomMate Matching through Roommate Features and begin a roommate search for the coming year.

Students with a submitted application that includes a room preference will have the opportunity to form a roommate group with others that have a matching room preference through May 31, 2023.

More information about roommate options and eHousing RoomMate Matching is available in the Housing How-To.
