Coordinate before move in

Coordination with your roommate before move in.

UNT Housing recommends that you take the time to talk to your roommate before you move in to open the initial lines of communication and start working through some of the topics that come up between roommates.  Topics of conversation might include those that traditionally arise between two people living in close proximity.

Here are some of the things you might talk about:

  • Study habits
  • Sleeping habits
  • Housekeeping habits
  • Personal property sharing
  • Guest and visitor expectations
  • Communication expectations
  • Social-life

In addition to taking time to get to know one another, planning for what items you will bring to campus and have in your room is a good step to take with your roommate before move in.  Reaching an agreement on whom will bring what (and that you are willing to share) can help defray some costs and avoid doubling up on items that may take up space in the room.  We find that this planning can apply to items such as:

  • Refrigerators
  • Microwaves
  • Other small appliances
  • TVs

Some students want to have their own.  Some roommates work out a plan to share.   We’d suggest it is better to have that conversation beforehand.
