Frequently Asked Questions

Do I qualify?

RLA Candidates must have a 2.5 cumulative GPA and 50 credit hours. However, we do consider candidates with as few as 30 credit hours under the Early Acceptance Program (which requires an additional application, two additional references and a letter to the selection committee stating why you feel you have exceptional circumstances and should be granted early acceptance).

I've applied before, do I need to submit a new application?

Yes, our system now requires you submit a new and complete application each time you apply.

How do I apply?

You will find all the information and material necessary by clicking "Job Application" on the side tool bar. Keep in mind that applications are due by the deadline stated in the calendar.

Do I need references and who can they be from?

You will need to have a least three (3) references. If you are applying under the Early Acceptance Program, you will need two (2) more for a total of five (5). Hall Directors, professors, past employers, and church leaders can be considered a valid reference. Your RA can not count as a primary reference, but will serve as one if you are applying under the Early Acceptance Program. Each of your references will need to fill out a sheet provided on this website. If they would like to include a letter, we will also consider that information.

What do I need to apply?

A complete application includes completing the entire online RLA Application on this website and three (3) references. If you are transferring to UNT and have no current UNT GPA, please include transcripts from other colleges you have attended. If you are applying under the Early Acceptance Program (you have under 50 credit hours) you will need an additional two (2) references from your current Hall Director and current Resident Assistant, and a letter to the selection committee stating why you feel you have exceptional circumstances and should be granted early acceptance.

What happens next?

After you turn in your completed application, you will enter Paper-cut. This is where the RLA Selection committee will review your application to make sure that you have all the necessary paperwork before you go further with the interview process. You will be notified via E-mail if you passed Paper-cut. If you do pass, you will participate in Phase I interviews. Please refer to the calendar for a list of specific dates.

What is Phase I?

Phase I is comprised to two stages. The first stage is a group interview process. You will be placed in a group of 4-6 candidates and will be asked to solve a problem. The second stage is a "two-on-one" where you are given an interview with a current Hall Director and a current RLA.

Can I work at a specific hall?

RAs are hired based on the need and fit for specific halls. It is not guaranteed that you will get hired at the hall you would like. However, if you are interested in working at a different hall other than the one you were hired at, you may apply for a transfer as openings occur.

How many positions are open?

The number of open positions varies per semester. We have had semesters where we needed a great deal of new RLAs for the upcoming semester, yet we have also had some where we only needed three for the entire Housing System. We will have a preliminary count of the need for the following semester by the day of Phase I.

What are the benefits of being a RA?

Besides having a really fun and flexible job, RAs enjoy free room and board as well as a stipend of approximately $185 at the beginning of every month. (When only a "half-month" is worked, such as coming back min-August for training or leaving mid-May after closedown, you will receive about $93 for that time.)

I didn't get hired by any hall. Is there still a chance one will call me?

Actually, yes, there is a chance you will still get a call. Occasionally after the Hall Directors hire for all of their empty positions, some RAs leave for various reasons. Therefore, the Hall Directors might need to fill these empty spots after Phase II is over. In this case they may call people who passed into Phase II but were not offered jobs.

So what do I do now?

Make sure you get involved in your hall through hall programs. A great way to get yourself noticed is joining your Hall Association. Besides that, just keep an eye out for more information.
