REAL
RESIDENTS ENGAGED IN ACADEMIC LIVING

Will I have to live at a certain hall if I join the REAL Communities program?
Yes, as part of the REAL program you will live at a specific residence hall on a designated wing with other people who applied for that wing as well. If you’re primary concern is a certain hall you want to live at, and that hall does not currently offer a REAL Community that appeals you, then the REAL program might not be the best Housing option for you at this time.
Can I request a roommate if I join the REAL program?
We encourage you to take the necessary steps to request a roommate. However, if you apply for the REAL program and request a roommate that did not apply and does not plan on applying, then it is likely that you will not end up rooming with that person.
Is anything required of me?
The Department of Housing and Residence Life considers the REAL program to be voluntary and will not require students to participate in all of the events and activities. We expect that those who choose to join this program are enthusiastic enough to participate in the programs and events held in conjunction with that wing. We will encourage you to be as much a part of the wing as you can, as we believe it will greatly benefit your time as a student at UNT.
Does the REAL program have any extra costs associated with it?
No, there is no fee to apply. The only potential extra cost would be if you applied for a REAL Community hosted at one of our newer halls, which have a higher housing rate.
What if I decide I don’t want to live on a REAL wing after all?
If you wish to cancel your application to the REAL Communities program before the start of the year, you will need to contact the Assignments and Collections office (940-565-2610). If you make this decision during the year, you will have to wait for the Room Change period. Your request will be processed according to availability; nothing is guaranteed.
What if I change my major mid-semester, will I have to move?
We encourage you to remain on the wing and enjoy the community, even if you are no longer majoring in that area. If you do wish to seek another housing option, however, you will have to follow proper housing policy on how to go about that.
Will my Resident Assistant (RA) share the same major/interest as me?
In most cases, we will have an RA on that wing who is either majoring in that field or a related one. We want them to be able to relate to you in that sense and offer whatever experience they may have to help you academically, as well as come up with enticing programs that revolve around the topic of that wing.
Besides the RA, who else works with the REAL program?
Each wing will have a UNT faculty or staff member who works closely with the RA to put on engaging programs that will help you gain more knowledge and experience in your major/field of interest.
Will all the programs and events revolve around the theme of the wing?
Absolutely not; we don’t want to over-inundate you with activities that only deal with your wing’s specific theme. The RAs and the Hall Association will also be putting on a wide array of social events that will appeal to you on all levels, not just academically.
Can I join a REAL Community if I don’t plan on majoring in that specific theme?
With every major-specific wing, we encourage students who are just strongly interested in that subject to consider joining, even if they don’t plan to select it as their major. Some programs on the wing might appeal more to a person in that major but there will still be a great deal of other activities that will interest you.
What if none of the current REAL Communities apply to me?
While we are always trying to develop new ideas and come up with new wings, we understand that right now we might not cover every major or interest. Check the Housing website for updates and additions of new REAL Community wings, as there may be an option that fits you for the following year.
